Gender equality is about adding, not about taking anything away, doing the opposite or making everyone the same.

  • Gender equality is about adding, not about taking anything away, doing the opposite or making everyone the same.

  • We can still keep Spider man and Barbie but ascribe Barbie and Spiderman new attributes, characteristics, new interests etc.

Gender equality is about our acting space, what I can say or do, but also about how I can effect my own life and make my own choises.

  • Gender equality is also about my posssibilities to effect the society in which I live.

  • Gender equality is closely connected to power.

  • When working with gender equality among youths we have a two folded aim:

  • 1. To show how gender (in)equality effects individuals and their possibility to have power over their own life and to make their own choices.

  • 2.to show how gender (in)equality is produced and reproduced in society and what consequences this have.

  • Violence is a way of establish power or take control of another person.

  • Per Isdal: violence is a reaction to and an attempt to control frustration and powerlessness.

  • Violence may be physical, psychological, sexual and economical.

  • Boys and men are brought up in a culture of violence. Men are raised and encourage to use some violence. Especially in sport, in video games, and when boy play a majority of the toys are centered on violence in one way or another.

  • Society celebrates violence but at the same time is too much violence not accepted in our society.

Many believe that men's violence has biological explanations. This is wrong because ALL men do not hit. The men who use violence, choose themselves actively to do so. This means that violence can be prevented.

  • If we are to stop violence against women, it is important to stop the men's tendency to resort to violence in other situations. It is also important to work with the gender norms that contribute towards this ideal of masculinity

Everyday Violence:

  • Everyday Violence:

  • May be pushing, kicking, hitting, power games or verbal abuse. Often explained by "it's just for fun.“ or “ they are just boys being boys”

  • The boy groups should be violence-free

  • In the girl and boy groups it is important to always:

  • Have a gender perspective, in everything you do and all discussions you have.

  • Be careful not to cement gender norms – challenge them instead. Don’t give gender stereotyped compliments,

  • For example:

  • Don´t say to girls -You are so pretty today.

  • Don´t say to boys - That was brave.

  • Have a structural perspective where gender equality as a socially constructed system is made visible to the participants.

  • Remember that to be able to break gender norms one need to have knowledge about gender norms and gender inequality as a system.
